This paper contributes to the discussion and analysis of the extent to which the South African Economy
is exposed to the threats and opportunities of technological disruption, the mechanisms by which
disruptions may manifest, and associated employment exposure. The South African economy is
analysed in terms of total output and employment per sector, down to SIC level 2 or 3 codes, as
appropriate to reflect key sectors and segments. A suggested generalized model for modes of
disruption is presented and explored. This model is then used to assess the exposure of each sector of
the South African economy to technological disruption, as a basis to help focus attention on those
sectors which have the highest contribution to total economic output and employment and which are
most exposed to technological disruption.
